Edna Lewis
Edna Lewis was a distinguished American chef and author renowned for her evocative seasonal Southern cooking that celebrated both fresh, in-season ingredients and the culinary heritage of the Black community in rural Virginia. As one of the first Black women to write successful mainstream cookbooks on Southern cuisine, Lewis’s recipes and writings chronicled the traditions of her childhood in Freetown and elevated them to national prominence.
